The short version
- You don't need an account, a real name, a photo, your contacts or your location. You pick a nickname.
- There are no ads and we don't use an advertising ID.
- Quizzes and results are deleted after 365 days, or sooner if you delete them.
- You can delete everything from the app at any time.
What we collect and why
- Nicknames. When you make or play a quiz. Shown on the quiz and its leaderboard. Kept with the quiz.
- Quiz content, answers and scores. To run the quiz and the leaderboard. Kept with the quiz.
- An anonymous app ID. Created when you first open the app, so we know which quizzes are yours. Kept until you delete your data.
- A notification token. Only if you allow notifications, so we can tell you when a friend plays. Kept until you delete your data or it stops working.
- A random attempt code (web players). Stored in your browser so each browser plays a quiz once. We keep only a scrambled (hashed) copy, with your play.
- Your IP address. Used briefly to stop spam and abuse. We store only a scrambled copy, for up to 24 hours, or with a report you send until the quiz is deleted.
- App usage and crash reports. Collected in the app by Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, to fix bugs and improve the app. Advertising features and Google signals are off. Kept for up to 14 months.
- Server logs. Events such as "quiz viewed" or "quiz played", with the quiz ID. Kept for 30 days.
Who can see what
- Anyone with a quiz link can see the creator's nickname, the questions and the leaderboard (nicknames and scores).
- After playing, a player sees the creator's answers and how their own answers compare.
- Only the quiz creator sees each player's individual answers.
- There are no public profiles, no search for people and no messages between users.
- We never sell your data.
Service providers
We use Google Firebase (hosting, database, cloud functions, notifications, analytics and crash reports) to run BestieCheck. Quizzes, answers and scores are stored on Google's servers in India (Mumbai), and link-preview images in the United States. Analytics and crash reports are processed by Google in the United States. Google processes it for us under its data processing terms, which include safeguards for transfers outside the UK.
Our legal bases
Under UK data protection law we rely on our legitimate interests to run quizzes, keep them safe and fix problems, and on your consent for notifications, which you can turn off in your phone's settings at any time.
Children
BestieCheck is for people aged 13 and over. It isn't meant for children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has used it, contact us and we'll delete their data. We built BestieCheck with the UK Age Appropriate Design Code in mind: privacy settings are high by default, there's no ad profiling, no location and no way for strangers to find or contact you.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, or object to how we use it. To delete everything you've made in the app, open Settings → Delete all my data. Web players can email us the quiz link and their nickname to have their entry removed, or ask the quiz creator to remove it. See how to delete your data.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Security
Data is sent over HTTPS. Answer keys stay on our servers, and access rules limit who can read each piece of data.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
